Truman Lake Fishing Report

Fishing Report - 11-27-2017

By Steve Blake

Current water level is 606.34 and water surface temp on the main lake is 47 degrees.

Took a little vacation for deer season but back in the swing of things now and the bite for most species has been awesome. With the water temps dropping below 50 degrees the white bass and hybrid fall shallow water bite has died. That being said the winter patterns for all other species is in full swing!!!!

For the past week we have been able to take limits of fat crappie in the 10 to 13 inch size range on the winter pattern with relative ease. We have been fishing a bluff pattern with a 1/4 ounce Bob Bates short shank jig head tipped with a Swarm 2 inch jig body. Best colors have been the chartreuse color combos of blue and char, black and char, red and char, and pink and char. Since the bite is often very subtle and we have had a lot of short strikes we have been biting off about half of the head of the jig body to shorten it. This has helped our hook up percentage immensely. We are fishing bare rock bluffs by dropping the jig to the bottom at depths of 20 to 25 feet lifting it just six inches to a foot off the bottom and easing along parallel to the bluff as slow as possible. The action in the right areas has been fast and furious as you can weed thru the smaller fish to take a nice limit in two to three hours for everyone in the boat on the right spots. This pattern for the crappie has been working on most parts of Truman.

Large mouth bass have begun their winter pattern also. Best baits have been jerk-baits in shad colored combinations. The bass are on the steeper chunk-rock banks 45 degree angle or more at depths of 3 to 6 feet. Work the bait in a twitch twitch pause retrieve and watch for the line to jump. Bites are soft so watching the line is a must. Bright sunny days with just a little breeze have been best for the bass bite as they will suspend off the steeper banks to sun. The steep main lake coves with little timber seem to be the best areas. Light line of 8 to 10 pound test is working best as it will allow the bait to have better action.

The blue cats have been on a strong feed the past two weeks. Fish from 3 to 10 pounds with an occasional monster over 40 pounds are coming on cut shad drifted on the deeper main lake flats of 15 to 30 feet. Limits have been the rule rather than the exception.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!!!!! The weather for the next few weeks looks to be very mild for this time of year so if you would like to get in on some super crappie action give me a call at 660-525-0692.

See ya at Sterett Creek marina!!!!
